QUESTIONS?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when a person routinely stops breathing while they sleep. This can happen dozens or even hundreds of times each night, disrupting sleep quality, preventing natural healing, and can lead to heart conditions and other life threatening ilness. This hault in breathing also starves the brain of oxygen and has been shown to be a contributing factor in dementia and alzheimer's.

  • What is an oral appliance?

Similar to a sports mouthguard or bleaching trays, a custom oral appliance is designed to keep your lower jaw in a forward position. This movement of the jaw helps open the airway while you sleep, allowing for proper airflow and preventing sleep apnea from occurring.

  • What is a CPAP device?

A CPAP (short for continuous positive airway pressure) is a device that connects to the nose or face via a mask worn at night. This helps to maintain oxygen flow by gently blowing air into the lungs. The CPAP is a traditional treatment for sleep apnea and a great option for sever cases. However, some patients find it cumbersome and difficult to use, and for those patients an oral appliance is a great alternative.

  • What is OSA vs. CSA?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the blockage of an airway while you sleep. This is often caused by the jaw and tissues falling back and temporarily collapsing the airway. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain signals to the diaphragm that it's time to breath, but the signal is not received.

  • What are the signs of sleep apnea?

Some common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

    • snoring
    • poor sleep quality
    • lack of energy and restfulness
    • lethargy and frequent movement during sleep
    • gasping or choking at night
    • morning headaches
  • What is TMD vs. TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder (more comonly referred to as TMJ) is actually one of many broader Temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Many people confuse the two, grouping jaw problems under TMJ.

  • Do I need surgery for TMD?

At the Center for Sleep and TMJ, we believe in non invasive methods of treatment such as oral appliance therapy and restorative dentistry. However, in some severe cases, you may require surgery to fix TMD.

  • What’s your service area?

At the Center for Sleep Apnea and TMJ Suffolk, we welcome patients from throughout Virginia and North Carolina and often have patient travel long distances for our quality of care and expertise. Our facilities are conveniently located in Suffolk VA.
